Having a set of goals is a great idea… but creating that list is essentially useless unless you achieve those goals.
In order to plan and stay on track to meeting your goals, use this handy checklist.
I apply this list everyday to achieve my own business goals and regularly fine-tune this list. Check back occasionally for the updated version.
Clarity + Emotion + Action = Achievement
How to use this checklist
To successfully achieve something is rarely the result of chance, but it requires following a proven blueprint, or step-by-step plan.
This checklist is designed to help you clarify your goal (to define and see it clearly – including specifics and details), and to help you regularly connect with it on an emotional level.
Understand the steps
Each of the Steps is action-orientated – each one begins with a verb! The action for the individual steps is self-explanatory. The steps should be completed in the order shown.
- Review the entire plan
- Create a personal plan, beginning with Step 1
- Print out this checklist and as you complete each step, check it off. Before you know it, you will be closer to achieving success!
Achieve your goals – Step by step plan
Step 1: Clarify your Goal
Write down exactly what you want to achieve. Include as many details as possible.
Step 2: Discover a Big Why
Write down a list of specific, positive, emotional reasons for achieving the goal and place the list where you can review it regularly.
Step 3: Define the Pain
List all the regrets and / or consequences of NOT achieving it (think one, three and five years into the future).
Step 4: Capture your Vision
Create a vision board with pictures (people, places and things) and words that help you ‘live’ the emotional experience of achieving your goal.
Step 5: Learn what you Need to do
Use Google to find books, courses, articles, how-to’s, guides, tips and videos that explain how to accomplish your goal.
Step 6: Find a Mentor
Create a list of 10-20 questions and interview someone who’s achieved what you want to achieve.
Step 7: Develop a Plan
Develop a simple step-by-step plan containing milestones with dates. You won’t know all the details initially. You just need a rough guide.
Step 8: Choose some Rewards
Choose several small rewards (books, movies, clothes, tools, days off, etc.) to give yourself after completing various stages of your goal.
Step 9: Identify Resources
Take inventory of what assets you currently have at your disposal, including tools, skills, experience, contacts, websites, etc.
Step 10: Eliminate Roadblocks
Create a simple list of potential roadblocks you could encounter, then decide (in advance) how to quickly overcome them.
Step 11: Remove Distractions
Too much TV, games, over-socializing (in person, on the phone, or online) consume valuable time. Create a ‘time-budget’ for these activities.
Step 12: Enlist a Partner
If you know someone who desires the same outcome as you, join forces with them – there’s a real power in synergy!
Step 13: Manage your Time
Take the steps within your plan, assign them each a time (30 mins. etc.), then use a timer to focus on completing each of those steps.
Step 14: Connect with It
Regularly turn off all noise (TV, computer, phones, etc.) so you can sit quietly for 5-10 mins. to visualize and meditate on your goal.
Step 15: Maintain your Health
Good health provides energy! Drink plenty of water, eat healthy foods, breathe deeply, and get some moderate exercise.
Step 16: Become Accountable
Commit to your goal publicly by telling others about it (in person or online). Share with them both details and progress.
Step 17: Immerse Yourself in It
Surround yourself with anything (people, pictures, books, music or whatever) that keeps you immersed in the reality of your goal.
Step 18: Take Specific Action
Take at least one action toward achieving your goal each day – even if it’s something small.
Step 19: Stay Excited
Keep yourself excited about your goal by adopting a ‘What If…’ mindset: What if you do better than expected? What if it all goes right? Etc.
Step 20: Review your Progress
Spend 5-10 mins. a week reviewing your progress that you are making towards your goal, and make any changes as necessary.
